The reference site for Terazosin

Terazosin (marketed as Hytrin or Zayasel) is a selective alpha-1 antagonist used for treatment of symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH).

WHAT IS Terazosin?

Terazosin is in a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. Terazosin causes the blood vessels (veins and arteries) to relax and expand, which allows blood to pass more easily through them.

This particular medication is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Terazosin is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). It relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

FDA Information

Terazosin (Hytrin®) was approved by the FDA in 1993.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Terazosin is in a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. Terazosin causes the blood vessels (veins and arteries) to relax and expand, which allows blood to pass more easily through them.

Terazosin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Moreover, this medication is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). It relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

Other uses for this medicine

Terazosin also improves urinary symptoms and maximum urinary flow rate in men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

However, it is important that you talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your particular condition.

Dosage and using this medicine

USAGE

Terazosin comes as a capsule to be taken orally.

It is usually taken with or without food once a day at bedtime or twice a day (morning and evening). Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.

Take terazosin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor will start you on a low dose of terazosin and gradually increase your dose. If you stop taking terazosin for a few days or longer, your doctor will have to start you again on the lowest dose and gradually increase your dosage.

Terazosin controls high blood pressure and the symptoms of BPH but does not cure them. It may take 4 to 6 weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit of terazosin for BPH. Continue to take terazosin even if you feel well and never stop taking terazosin without first talking to your doctor.

DOSAGE

The dose of terazosin will vary depending on the patient. Follow your doctor’s orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of terazosin. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The number of tablets that you take depends on the strength of the medicine.

For benign enlargement of the prostate:
Adults – At first, 1 milligram (mg) taken at bedtime. Then, 5 to 10 mg once a day.
For high blood pressure:
Adults – At first, 1 mg taken at bedtime. Then, 1 to 5 mg once a day.
Children – Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

What special precautions should I follow?

BEFORE TAKING TERAZOSIN:

Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease. You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during therapy with terazosin.

Terazosin is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether terazosin will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take terazosin without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

Furthermore, it is not known whether terazosin passes into breast milk. Do not take terazosin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Avoid alcohol while taking terazosin. Alcohol may cause drowsiness or severely low blood pressure while taking terazosin.

Remember to use cautiously when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities until you know how the medication affects you. Terazosin may cause dizziness or drowsiness and if you experience these symptoms you should avoid these activities.

Avoid becoming overheated in hot weather and during exercise. Low blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting could result.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. NEVER take a double dose of this medication as this could cause your blood pressure to become severely low.

If you miss doses for several days in a row, call your doctor before taking any additional doses. Treatment may need to be restarted with a lower dose.
